Pilates
History
Joseph Pilates first introduced his exercise methods during WWI to non-ambulatory soldiers who found themselves weak and bedbound. Pilates attached springs to their hospital beds allowing for assisted, low impact, lower extremity strengthening which allowed for speedier recoveries and eventually led way to one of Pilates’ most well-known piece of equipment: the Reformer. Eventually, Joseph Pilates brought his training to the United States and eventually branded a method of exercise, rooted in rehabilitation, and meant to improve overall fitness, health and wellbeing.
Why Pilates?
- Increases bone density, strength, and flexibility

- Improves posture, balance, proprioception, and self-awareness during basic and dynamic movement

- Decreases risk of falls, prevents injury

- Encourages maximal muscular contraction
